Smaller Cars Have More Fatalities
February 2006
Compact cars may save you gas money, but could they also cost you your life? According to a government agency, the smallest cars have the highest fatality rate.
In a study of fatality records from 1997 to 2004, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that per 100,000 vehicles:
- Compact cars came in with the most fatalities, a rate of 17.76 deaths.
- Compact pick-up trucks were second with 16.87 deaths.
- Sub-compact vehicles had a rate of 16.85 deaths.
- Pickup trucks and SUVs had 15 deaths.
- Large vans had the fewest with 9.34 deaths.
Despite increased safety features, smaller, lighter vehicles are still more vulnerable in accidents than denser, larger vehicles.
