Reducing Backover Deaths of Children
July 2006
Next time you back out of your driveway, be sure to check your surroundings carefully. Since 1994, at least 500 children have died from being backed over according to the safety group, Kids and Cars.
Safety advocates are pushing for vehicle standards that would require all vehicles to have larger rearview mirrors, rear sensors, or cameras. They are also requesting that drivers are educated on the dangers of backover deaths.
Until laws are passed, remember these tips to prevent a backover death:
- Walk around and behind a vehicle before driving.
- Move children to a place where they are in full view.
- Let children know that parked or stopped vehicles might move, and just because they see the car does not mean the car sees them.
- Never leave children unattended around cars.
- Keep sidewalks, streets and pedestrians visible.
- Make sure vehicles are locked at all times.
Beginning in 2009, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will begin to include these non-traffic deaths in their statistics.
