PA Leads Country in ATV Deaths

September 2006

File this under a title our state could do without, Pennsylvania leads the pack for the most ATV-related deaths between 1982 and 2004. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), 357 people died in ATV accidents during this time period in Pennsylvania.

Here are some more troubling statistics about ATVs:

  • Around 6,500 people nationwide died in ATV accidents from 1982 through 2004.
  • One-third of these victims were children under the age of 16.
  • According to PennDot, ATV accidents on state roads injured 760 riders and killed 73.
  • Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh admits 60 to 70 children annually for ATV injuries.

Most of the deaths are due to improper equipment use, carelessness and lack of training. The American Academy of Pediatrics also recommends that children under 16 not ride ATVs.
