CPSC Issues Safety Warning for Kazuma Youth ATV's
June 2007
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued an alert to
warn parents about the dangers of the Kazuma Meerkat 50 Youth
All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV). The defective vehicle has no front brakes,
parking brake, or neutral indicator light, and the ATV may be started in
gear.
The Meerkat 50 is made for young ATV riders between the ages of six to 11. Coupled with the lack of experience of child riders, the missing brakes and other defects of the Meerkat 50 pose hazardous risks that could lead to serious injury. The CPSC has recommended that consumers immediately stop using the vehicle.
The Kazuma owner’s manual has insufficient information regarding safe maintenance and proper operation of the Meerkat 50. The company has also refused to supply the CPSC with information about accidents and injuries sustained during the use of their products. Over 2,500 Meerkat 50 ATVs have been sold since 2003.
