Pittsburgh DUI Checkpoint for Halloween Week
October 2007
Pittsburgh-area police may not have a treat, but they certainly have a
trick planned for drunk drivers taking to the roads around Halloween.
The Pittsburgh Police Department has announced that a large DUI
checkpoint will be in place on a major Pittsburgh highway for the
Halloween week.
To combat drunk drivers on the roads as they travel to-and-from Halloween parties, 90 police officers will populate the checkpoint. There will even be nurses on hand to give blood tests to any drivers suspected of DUI activity. There have been no official dates, times, or locations announced for the Pittsburgh DUI checkpoint.
Nearly 62 percent of the 483 people killed in car crashes over the 2005 Halloween holiday weekend had a blood alcohol content rating over the legal limit. Data also shows that the 2003 Halloween holiday weekend had 44 percent more deaths caused by drunk drivers than both the previous New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day holidays combined.
