Alcohol More Dangerous Than Some Illegal Drugs
March 2007
A new study has ranked alcohol as the fifth most dangerous drug out of a
list of commonly used substances. Tobacco also ranked above many illegal
drugs, placing ninth on the study’s list. Heroin and cocaine led the
pack of dangerous substances, while other illegal drugs such as
marijuana, LSD, and ecstasy were ranked below alcohol and tobacco.
Drugs were evaluated using three criteria, assessing the physical harm, potential for addiction, and impact on society of each substance. The study proposes that the current classification of abusive substances is inaccurate and should be revised according to the actual danger each drug poses.
