Michigan Motorcycle Helmet Law

Michigan

In Michigan, all motorcycle operators and riders, and any person less than 19 years old operating a moped, must wear helmets that have been approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation. To make sure your helmet is DOT-approved, it’s best to check with the state police before taking to Michigan roadways on a motorcycle.

The only exception to Michigan’s mandatory helmet law is for low-power vehicles that have an engine displacement less than 50cc, have less than 2 horsepower and/or have a maximum speed of less than 30 mph. If the rider is under 18, he/she still must wear a helmet even if the cycle meets these specifications.

As of March 28, 2012, a repeal of the helmet law has already cleared the Michigan House. The measure is to be sent to Gov. Rick Snyder for his consideration.
