Motorcycle Helmet Laws in the United States

Recently, some states have reconsidered their policy regarding wearing a helmet and riding a motorcycle. Click on one of the states below to find out more about the motorcycle helmet law in your state.

Federal Motorcycle Helmet Law

When a state requires motorcycle operators and/or riders to wear a helmet, the helmet must, at a minimum, comply with the United States Department of Transportation's Federal Motorcycle Vehicle Safety Standard 218.

State Motorcycle Helmet Law

Many states that have mandatory helmet laws reserve the right to establish stricter standards than that required under federal law. Because these standards are subject to change at any time, it is advisable to check with the appropriate state authority before operating or riding on a motorcycle in any state where the authority is empowered to establish stricter standards.
