Breaking News: Two Cardiologists Blamed for Implanting Unnecessary Heart Stents in 141 Patients
March 3, 2011 – A recent medical review initiated by Westmoreland Hospital has determined that in 2010 two local cardiologists may have implanted coronary stents in at least 141 patients who may not have needed them.
Experts have learned about the potentially unnecessary heart stent procedures in the 141 patients, but there could be many more. There were more than 2,000 stent procedures done at the Greensburg-based hospital in 2010 alone, and the two physicians performed more than 750 of them. The 141 patients received a letter from Excela Health notifying them of the situation.
Another study is under way for patients who received heart stents in 2009, and Forbes Regional Hospital – where the two cardiologists have practiced for the past few weeks – plans to review the procedures they conducted over the past few weeks.
This isn’t the first time that doctors have been accused of performing unnecessary heart stent procedures. In December 2010, the Senate Finance Committee released a report on another investigation. Results showed that a cardiologist at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, MD may have implanted 585 heart stents that may not have been necessary. More than 100 patients have filed legal claims against the hospital.

Coronary Stent Procedure Patients at Risk for Blood Clots and Heart Attack
A heart stent is a tiny wire mesh device designed to keep open clogged arteries in the heart. When used correctly, it improves blood flow to the heart and relieves chest pain and discomfort related to heart disease.
Patients who received heart stents and didn’t need them are at risk for blood clots and a heart attack, as well as other medical complications – especially within the first two years of receiving the stent, although they can occur years after the stent procedure. Typically patients have to take blood thinners, which help reduce the risk of blood clot. Unfortunately, the blood thinners can also cause serious side effects.
