Botulism Found in Organic Baby Food

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that the life-threatening botulism bacterium is contained in jars of Earth's Best organic baby food. The Clostridium botulinum bacterium has been found in the Earth's Best Organic 2 Apple Peach Barley Wholesome Breakfast variety.

The specific apple peach barley variety is sold in individual jars, 12 packs, and as part of the Earth's Best Organic 2 Wholesome Breakfast Variety Pack. Earth's Best is distributed through stores specializing in health food products, food retail outlets, and all Babies"R"Us and Toys"R"Us locations. The product was recalled by the manufacturer, Hain Celestial Group, on February 9, 2007.

Symptoms of Botulism Poisoning

About 100 cases of botulism are reported in the United States every year. Infants account for the majority of infections. Symptoms typically begin within 18 to 36 hours, but may appear as soon as six hours and as late as 10 days from the time of exposure.

Symptoms in adults and children:

  • Abdominal Cramps
  • Difficulty Breathing
  • Difficulty Speaking
  • Difficulty Swallowing
  • Double Vision
  • Dry Mouth
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Symptoms in infants:

  • Constipation
  • Difficulty Breathing
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Poor Feeding
  • Weak Cry
  • Weak Sucking

Botulism may be deadly if it is not treated immediately.
