What is Wellbutrin?
Wellbutrin, known generically as bupropion hydrochloride, is from the family of antidepressant drugs called norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitors (NDRIs). Manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, Wellbutrin is approved to treat depression.
Wellbutrin Controversy
Wellbutrin is not approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of depression in patients under 18 years of age and cannot be promoted for the treatment of teens with depression. But doctors can prescribe the drug for depression in teens as an “off-label” or unapproved use.
FDA Warning For Wellbutrin
FDA requires all antidepressant medications to have a "black box" warning about the increased risk of suicide in teenagers and children. But, a black box warning does not prohibit the use of antidepressants in children and teenagers.
