What is Vioxx?

Vioxx, known generically as rofecoxib, is a non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) often referred to by its drug class name, COX-2 inhibitors. Vioxx was prescribed for pain associated with arthritis.

In September 2004, drug giant Merck pulled Vioxx from the market after a clinical trial confirmed an increased risk of heart attack or stroke.

Possible Side Effects of Taking Vioxx

Vioxx is linked to severe cardiovascular problems, including heart attacks and strokes. Vioxx has also been linked to other side effects, including blood clots, intestinal problems, and kidney damage.

Vioxx Trials

Internal documents indicate Merck knew about the Vioxx risks earlier than they reported and did nothing to inform patients or physicians of the potentially serious cardiovascular side effects. Merck faces 14,200 Vioxx lawsuits due to people who claim the drug caused serious injury.
