Trasylol

What is Trasylol?

Trasylol is the brand name of the drug aprotinin, used to prevent blood loss during heart bypass surgery. Manufactured by Bayer, Trasylol was approved for use by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 1993.

Possible Side Effects of Taking Trasylol

  • Kidney Failure
  • Heart Attack
  • Heart Failure
  • Stroke
  • Brain Damage

FDA Review of Trasylol

In February of 2006, the FDA recognized two medical publications that cited Trasylol as a high risk drug with dangerous side effects. A “Public Health Advisory” was issued to alert doctors of the potentially harmful qualities of the blood loss drug.

In September of 2006, the FDA learned of a secret study conducted by Trasylol’s manufacturer that reinforced the previously unfavorable results of the drug. The FDA received information of Bayer’s study directly following a public meeting held to discuss the benefit-risk profile of Trasylol.

In November of 2007, the FDA requested that Bayer suspend marketing and sales of Trasylol. A Canadian study was stopped after researchers found evidence that Trasylol increased the risk of death in patients. The FDA is currently reviewing data from the halted study to determine if the benefits of Trasylol outweigh the risks.

Trasylol was also thought to have been used off label in other medical procedures, including hip surgery. Patients may have received the drug during such operations, resulting in similar complications to the drug’s use in heart bypass surgery.
