Research Shows Topamax Increases Risk of Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate
March 2011 – The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is strengthening the warning label on containers of the prescription medication Topamax (topiramate) and all generic versions after recent research showed that there is a risk for birth defects like cleft lip and cleft palate in babies whose mothers took the drug while they were pregnant.
Topamax/topiramate is a drug approved to treat people who have Lennox-Gastaut syndrom, a disorder that causes seizures, and for patients who suffer from other types of seizures. The brand was originally manufactured by Ortho-McNeil Neurologics and Noramco, both owned by Johnson & Johnson. It’s also prescribed for patients to prevent migraine headaches.
Cleft lip and cleft palate, also referred to as oral clefts, occur when parts of the lip or palate – the roof of the mouth – do not completely join together early in the first trimester of pregnancy. That means there is an even greater risk, because the birth defects may happen before women realize they are pregnant.
Cleft lip and cleft palate defects range in severity and can lead to problems with eating, talking, and cause ear infections. Children typically have surgery to correct the defects and do well after treatment, but scars are common.
Topamax’s pregnancy label category will change to Category D. A Category D medication means research shows that there are risks for the fetus, but that the benefits of the drug may outweigh the risks in some situations. The Patient Medication Guide and prescription information will be updated.
If you are currently taking Topamax and think you may be pregnant or could become pregnant, contact your doctor right away to discuss other treatment options.
