What is Remeron?
Remeron, known generically as mirtazapine, is from the family of drugs called tetracyclic antidepressants. Manufactured by Organon, Remeron is approved to treat depression.
Remeron Controversy
Remeron is not approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of depression in patients under 18 years of age and cannot be promoted for the treatment of teens with depression. But, doctors can prescribe the drug for depression in teens as an “off-label” or unapproved use.
FDA Warning For Remeron
FDA requires all antidepressant medications to have a "black box" warning about the increased risk of suicide in teenagers and children. But, a black box warning does not prohibit the use of antidepressants in children and teenagers.
