Dangerous Drug Alert: The Ortho Evra Birth Control Patch
What is the Ortho Evra Patch?
The Ortho Evra patch, known generically as norelgestromin/ethinyl estradiol, is a birth control patch worn on the user’s skin. Manufactured by Johnson & Johnson, the Ortho Evra patch has been used by approximately 4 million women since it went on sale in 2002.
Possible Side Effects of Using the Ortho Evra Patch
According to the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), users of the Ortho Evra Patch have twice the risk of blood clots and strokes compared to other hormonal contraceptives. FDA records indicate 17 patch users between the ages of 17 and 30 suffered fatal heart attacks, blood clots and possible strokes.
FDA Announces Ortho Evra Label Changes
In November 2005, patch manufacturer Johnson & Johnson changed the drug's label to indicate users are exposed to 60 percent more estrogen than pill users. In addition, recent company research found the risk of clots in the lungs and legs is doubled in patch users.
