Neurontin is FDA-approved to help treat epilepsy and shingles pain. But, approximately 90 percent of Neurontin prescriptions are for off-label uses such as the treatment of bipolar disorder and a variety of pain syndromes.

Off Label Usage of Neurontin

Pharmaceutical maker Parke-Davis, which was acquired by Pfizer, conducted clinical trials on the use of Neurontin as a treatment for bipolar disorder. Studies showed that a placebo was as good as – or worked better than – Neurontin. Even so, the company continued to promote Neurontin as an off-label treatment for bipolar disorder, and 10 other conditions, creating a potential safety risk for patients.
