Multaq – Treatments, Side Effects, and Dangers
Multaq, manufactured by the French pharmaceutical company Sanofi-Aventis, is prescribed for people who have had atrial fibrillation (a heart rhythm disorder that can cause fast and irregular heartbeats) or atrial flutter (a heart rhythm disorder than can cause the heart to beat really fast) within the past six months and who have other conditions that give them an increased risk of heart disease – like high blood pressure, stroke, or diabetes.
The medication was approved by the FDA in July 2009. It is marketed as lowering the chance people would need to go to the hospital for heart problems. More than a half-million prescriptions for Multaq have been written since the drug was approved.
Multaq carries a black box warning – which is the most serious type – stating the drug can cause severe complications. People with severe heart failure who take Multaq have an increased chance of death and should not take the drug. The medication also can harm an unborn baby or cause birth defects, and it can cause serious problems when taken with other prescription drugs. Other side effects include diarrhea, nausea, fatigue, stomach pain, skin rash, and slowed heartbeat.
Reports Show Drug is Linked to Liver Damage
On January 14, 2011, the Associated Press released a story warning of liver damage reports linked to Multaq. The FDA said that several patients have suffered liver damage while taking the medicine. Two women had been taking the drug for 4.5 and 6 months and had to have their livers removed.
Other symptoms of liver damage and disease include:
- Jaundice (yellowish or orange tint to your skin and/or eyes)
- Loss of appetite (weight loss can turn into anemia)
- Stomach ulcers
- Pale or light-colored stool (due to blocked or low bile secretion), irritable bowel movements
- Enlarged liver (in severe cases can cause difficulty breathing due to pressure on the diaphragm)
- Excessive thirst and/or urination
- Bloating
- Fatigue, loss of energy
- Difficulty blood clotting
- Spider nevus – spots surrounded by fine blood vessels
- Nosebleeds, presence of blood in vomit or stools (in advanced cases)
