What is Levetiracetam?
Levetiracetam is a prescription anticonvulsant epilepsy medication, also sold under the brand name, Keppra. It was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2006.
Levetiracetam is approved for use in combination with other seizure drugs to treat medical conditions such as:
- simple and complex partial seizures
- myclonic seizures
- generalized tonic-clonic seizures (often called grand mal seizures)
Keppra has also been prescribed off-label to treat neuropathic pain, migraines, Landau-Kleffner syndrome, autism, and social anxiety.
Side Effects of Levetiracetam and Keppra
Research has shown that taking levetiracetam may actually make seizure incidents worse for some patients. In particular, generic Keppra, sold as levetiracetam, has been cited as risk for increased seizure activity.
The switch from brand name Keppra to generic levetiracetam has been identified as the primary cause of an increase, or negative change, in seizure activity for those with epilepsy.
