What is Ketek?
Ketek, known generically as Telithromycin, is a prescription antibiotic drug used to treat upper respiratory infections such as sinusitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia. Manufactured by Sanofi-Aventis, Ketek was approved for use by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2004.
Possible Side Effects of Taking Ketek
Ketek is linked to severe liver damage, liver failure and death.
Symptoms of Ketek-related Liver Failure
- Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes)
- Blurred vision
- Flu-like symptoms (fatigue, nausea, diarrhea)
- Bleeding easily
- Itchy skin
- Swollen abdomen
- Dark urine
FDA Review of Ketek
These serious side-effects have prompted a federal investigation of Ketek. The FDA now requires Ketek to carry a bold-type warning about liver failure and severe injury, sometimes fatal, in patients taking the drug.
In both 2001 and 2003, the FDA refused to approve Ketek for public use, citing a lack of safety information on the drug’s label. Since the FDA approved the antibiotic in 2004, doctors have written more than five million Ketek prescriptions in the U.S. The FDA has internally debated whether approving the antibiotic was a mistake.
