February 2003: Newly released documents suggest executives at Bayer were aware of problems with its anti-cholesterol drug Baycol. Attorneys filing lawsuits against Baycol's manufacturer, Bayer, suggest the company promoted the drug even though Bayer's own analysis found patients taking the anti-cholesterol drug were contracting a rare muscle disorder at a higher rate than patients on similar drugs. |
What is Baycol?
Baycol, known generically as lipobay, is a cholesterol-lowering drug manufactured by Bayer Corporation.
Baycol Withdrawn Due to Rhabdomyolysis
On August 8, 2001, Baycol was voluntarily withdrawn from the market by the manufacturer.
Effective immediately, Bayer has discontinued the marketing and distribution of all dosage strengths of Baycol. Patients who are currently taking Baycol should have their Baycol discontinued and be switched to an alternative therapy.
Baycol was originally approved by the FDA in 1997. It is a cholesterol lowering drug commonly referred to as a "statin". Bayer pulled Baycol after it was linked to significantly higher incidences of injury than with other approved statin drugs on the market. Baycol is the 12th prescription drug to be taken off the U.S. market for dangerous side effects since 1997.
According to findings by Bayer Corporation, some people who took Baycol experienced rhabdomyolysis, a life-threatening condition that causes severe muscle cell breakdown where the contents of the muscle cells are released into the bloodstream. This condition can eventually lead to kidney (renal) failure and death. The FDA reports 31 Baycol-related deaths in the United States due to severe rhabdomyolysis.
