Allopurinol / Zyloprim

What is Allopurinol?
Allopurinol, sold under the brand name Zyloprim in the United States, is prescribed to treat hyperuricemia, a condition that results from excessive uric acid in the blood plasma.
For example, allopurinol is prescribed to treat chronic gout, one of the more common diseases that stems of excessive uric acid in the bloodstream.
Allopurinol and Zyloprim Connected to Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN)
Zyloprim and allopurinol – along with other drugs such as Dilantin and Lamictal – have been linked to serious skin disorders, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). Both conditions are considered life-threatening.
Symptoms of SJS include:
- Fatigue
- Fever
- Lesions
- Rashes
- Sore Throat
- Ulcers
Catching SLS in the early stages reduces the risk of fatality. However, SJS is considered an emergency condition and must be treated immediately.
Those who are able to recover from SJS may be left with continuing medical complications such as organ damage, cornea damage, and blindness.
Medically, SJS is regarded as a milder form of TEN. Though many symtoms are the same, the results of TEN are more severe. For those who experience TEN, the top layer of their skin, the epidermis, will detach from the lower layers, the dermis.
