What is Actos?
Actos is the brand name drug for pioglitazone, which is used to treat Type 2 diabetes.
In patients with Type 2 diabetes, the body cannot process insulin like it should – so it can’t control the amount of sugar in the bloodstream. This is different than those with Type 1 diabetes, when the body does not produce insulin at all.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is reviewing a study that focused on Actos and whether it increases patients’ risk of bladder cancer. The drug’s manufacturer analyzed data after five years and found that some patients may be at risk – especially those who have been taking the drug long-term and those who have taken large amounts of the drug over time.
