ACE Inhibitors & Birth Defects
Mothers who took ACE inhibitors to control blood pressure during the first trimester of pregnancy were more likely to have babies with major birth defects than babies born to mothers who didn't take these drugs. The joint study, funded by the HHS Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), was published in the June 8, 2006 issue of New England Journal of Medicine.
ACE Inhibitor Study Findings
The study determined that about 7 percent of babies exposed to ACE inhibitors suffered serious birth defects. In comparison, approximately 2 percent of babies whose mothers who did not take ACE inhibitors developed major birth defects.
Black Box Warning
ACE inhibitors currently carry a "black box" warning about their danger to unborn babies in the second and third trimesters of gestation. The new study, however, confirms the increased risk of dangers of using the drugs during the first trimester of pregnancy.
