March 2007
The jury of a Vioxx retrial has ordered Merck & Co. to pay an Idaho postal worker and his wife $47.5 million. The verdict found the discontinued painkiller, Vioxx, to blame for Frederick "Mike" Humeston’s heart attack.
Merck originally won the case against Humeston in the fall of 2005. But that verdict was overturned and a retrial was ordered due to new evidence that emerged.
Vioxx was pulled from the market in 2004 by Merck. The painkiller has been linked to heart attacks and strokes, as well as blood clots, intestinal damage, and kidney failure.
