Tylenol Increases Liver Damage Risk Says FDA

May 2009

Tylenol linked to liver damage, says FDA. Acetaminophen, the main ingredient in Tylenol, increases the risk of liver damage, says a recent Food and Drug Administration (FDA) report. As a result, the FDA is recommending stronger label warnings and dose limitations for all drugs containing Acetaminophen.

Since many people don’t realize that Acetaminophen is present in a variety of over-the-counter products, the report says consumers may exceed safe consumption levels if they unknowingly take multiple drugs that contain the ingredient. This could lead to liver toxicity which can result in liver failure and even death.

The FDA is recommending 3,250 milligrams as the new maximum adult daily dose, compared to the current 4,000 milligram limit. Other suggestions offered by the agency include decreasing tablet strength for immediate release versions, limiting options in liquid versions for children, and strengthening public information campaigns.
