Simplicity Announces Third Major Crib Recall

September 2008

Recall announced for 600,000 Simplicity cribs The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced the third major recall of Simplicity brand children’s sleeping equipment this year, this one involving 600,000 defective cribs. The cribs, which were sold at major retailers nationwide, pose an entrapment and suffocation hazard to children.

It was discovered that problems with the hardware on the cribs can cause the drop-side to come off the tracks. When this happens, it can create a dangerous gap in which a child can be entrapped or suffocated. The recall involves model numbers 8620, 8745, 8748, 8755, 8756, 8778, 8810, and 8994 and model names Aspen and Crib N Changer Combo, Gabrielle, Camille, Providence, and Shenandoah. The defective products were sold in stores nationwide from January 2005 through August 2008.

Because Simplicity has gone out of business, the CPSC is working with retailers like Babies ‘R’ Us, Burlington Coat Factory/Baby Depot, Target and Wal-Mart to get the faulty cribs recalled. One year ago, Simplicity recalled one million cribs after the deaths of two infants. Last month, 900,000 Simplicity bassinets were recalled due to a different hardware malfunction.
