Disney Stores Recall Products Due to Lead Paint Hazard

May 2008

Disney products recalled Disney has recalled a toy and a sleeping bag sold at its popular retail stores because they pose a safety risk to children. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that Pirates of the Caribbean Sleeping Bags and Tinker Bell Wands were found to violate the federal lead paint standard.

Both dangerous products were sold at Disney stores nationwide from April 2007 through October 2007. The surface paint on the Pirates of the Caribbean Sleeping Bag’s zipper pull contains excessive levels of lead, the CPSC said. The paint on the pearl beads of the Tinker Bell Wands also contains excessive levels of lead. Consumers are urged to immediately take the recalled products away from children and return them to a Disney store for a full refund.

Lead poisoning can lead to such side effects as neurological problems, nausea, abdominal pain, headache, and in severe cases coma, seizure, and kidney problems. Children are especially susceptible to the effects of lead paint poisoning. According to the CPSC, about 310,000 U.S. children ages 1 to 5 have blood lead levels that require treatment or other measures.
