Diabetes Drug Causes Bone Fractures in Women

March 2007

Pioglitazone causes bone fractures in women Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. has released a notice to physicians that their medications for type 2 diabetes may cause bone fractures in women. ACTOS, ACTOplus met and duetact all contain pioglitazone, the agent responsible for the increased risk of fracture.

The side effect was confirmed through data that monitored patients using the Takeda products versus patients taking a placebo or other medication. Fractures were most common in the forearm, hand, wrist, foot, ankle or leg.

The study found no increased risk of fracture in men taking pioglitazone.
