Public Citizen, a consumer advocacy group, has gone to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to stop Pfizer from airing their new Celebrex television ad. The ad began last week after the FDA put a stop to them in 2004 over concerns the drug raised the risks of heart attacks and strokes.
Public Citizen claims the new Celebrex ad is misleading and plays down the cardiovascular and gastrointestinal risks of the drug. According to the FDA, Pfizer submitted the ad for review before putting it on the air. The FDA has told the consumer advocacy group that they will look into their claims and take the appropriate action.
Celebrex is the only Cox-2 inhibitor still on the U.S. market. Bextra and Vioxx were removed for the cardiovascular problems associated with them.
