Less than a week after a man was tragically killed by a hit-and-run driver while riding his bike on Penn Avenue in Point Breeze, another bicyclist was struck by a motorist in the same block.
Unfortunately, the bicyclist, who suffered serious injuries when he was hit by an SUV Tuesday night in the 7700 block of Penn Avenue, died Wednesday evening. Currently, Allegheny County homicide detectives are reconstructing the accident scene to learn how the crash occurred.
Unlike the driver in the July 25th accident who immediately fled the scene after hitting the bicyclist, the driver involved in the most recent crash stayed at the accident scene with the bicyclist. However, the driver involved in the second crash did not have a valid driver’s license.
City officials are calling on motorists and bicyclists to abide by the new bicycle safety law and be cautious and respectful of one another. One of the key provisions of the new law requires drivers to provide at least four feet of clearance when passing a bicyclist.
