Over the years, car manufacturers have made great strides in building vehicles that are safer and more reliable for drivers. Despite these efforts, the number of people who were killed in car accidents in the first three months of 2012 increased significantly compared to last year.
According to the Governor’s Highway Safety Administration (GHSA), it is estimated that traffic deaths increased a staggering 13.5 percent in the first quarter of 2012, from 6,720 to 7,630 fatalities. This represents the second largest year-to-year quarterly increase since the government began recording traffic fatalities in 1975.
GHSA officials say that the unusually warm winter and good weather led more people to drive, increasing the overall risk of a car accident. Prior to 2012, first quarter fatalities had been experiencing a downward trend since 2006.
