After nearly 100 reports of uncontrollable acceleration, Ford Motor Company is recalling more than 400,000 Escape crossover SUVs because of possible throttle-control problems.
The recall will affect roughly 421,000 Escape crossover SUVs that are equipped with V6 engines and cruise control. It will only affect Escapes that were made for the 2001 through 2004 model years. So far, there have been 13 reported crashes related to the issue, which have led to nine injuries and one death.
According to Ford, the cruise control cable can become stuck between the engine cover and cruise control cable cover. This prevents the car from returning to a slower speed after the driver releases the gas pedal.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is also investigating the identical Mazda Tribute because of similar problems, but Mazda has not yet issued a recall.
