May and June Are Deadly Months for Teen Drivers

If you’re a high school senior, there’s a lot going on right now – you’re studying for finals, finalizing prom plans, and getting ready to go to college or enter the workforce. Whether you’re excited, nervous, or a little sad about all of the changes that are ahead, one thing’s for sure – the future seems guaranteed. The reality, however, is that for too many teen drivers it’s all taken away in the blink of an eye – and the next few months are particularly dangerous ones.

Seven of the 10 deadliest days for teen car accidents happen between Memorial Day and Labor Day. In fact, there are an average of 13 teen traffic deaths per day in May and June. Experts aren’t exactly sure why this is, but prom and graduation parties, late night driving, and an increased amount of underage drinking and drunk driving most likely all play a role. It appears as though the carefree feeling of summer can lead to uncharacteristically risky behavior and dangerous decisions.

May has been designated National Youth Safety Month in an effort to raise awareness about teen car accidents, which are the number one killer of teenagers in the United States. Even though Pennsylvania lawmakers are doing their part by enacting new, tougher laws, teenagers are the ones who can make the biggest impact. Putting your cell phone away, fastening your seatbelt, and never getting behind the wheel after you’ve been drinking are all easy, life-saving decisions you can make.

Here’s something else you can do – sign our Don’t Drink & Drive and Don’t Text & Drive pledges. Encourage your friends to do the same. Make the promise that you’ll do your part to keep this prom and graduation season a safe one (plus, you’ll be entered for a chance to win a $100 Visa Gift Card).

Enjoy the coming months – they should be happy memories that last you a lifetime.
