Ford Motor Company has announced a recall of over 500,000 SUVs and minivans due to reports of fires and power losses associated with faulty braking and electrical systems.
The recall includes 286,000 Ford Escape SUVs made for the 2001 and 2002 model years. These vehicles were outfitted with faulty brake master cylinder reservoir caps that can leak brake fluids. Leaking brake fluids can cause electrical shortages in antilock brake systems and lead to smoking or fire.
Ford also recalled 253,000 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans for 2004 and 2005 model years because of defective torque converters. Malfunctions of this device can cause vehicles to lose the ability to move forward or reverse without warning, increasing the risk of a car accident.
