The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says it is revoking Avastin‘s approval as a breast cancer treatment because the drug is not safe and effective.
Avastin is still approved to treat other types of cancer, including lung, kidney, colon, and brain. It also has an off-label use as a treatment for macular degeneration. According to a report in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Avastin increases the risk of developing blood clots, among many other serious side effects, including: heart attack, stroke, massive bleeding, severe high blood pressure, kidney damage, and infertility. Avastin’s benefits do not outweigh these risks when treating breast cancer, said the FDA.
