2005 Pennsylvania alcohol-related accident statistics

  • In 2005, there were 580 fatalities from alcohol-related crashes.
  • 89% of those killed in alcohol-related crashes were in the same vehicle as the drunk driver. 72% of those killed were the drunk drivers themselves.
  • 79% of drunk drivers involved in crashes are male.
  • On an average day in 2005, there were 36 alcohol-related crashes with 1.6 fatalities and 29 injured people.
  • The majority of drunk driving crashes occur at night - 77%.
  • Alcohol-related crash fatalities were highest between the hours of midnight and 4am.
  • Alcohol-related crash fatalities were highest on Saturday.

2005 Pennsylvania single vehicle accident statistics

  • In 2005, Pennsylvania had 41,901 one-vehicle crashes.
  • Passenger cars accounted for over 27,553 - or almost 66% - of all single-vehicle crashes.
  • Light trucks accounted for 29.7%
  • The remainder of these accidents were accounted for by heavy trucks (2%), motorcycles (1.9%), school buses (0.1%), other (0.5%).

2005 Pennsylvania bicycle accident statistics

  • Traffic crashes involving bicyclists resulted in 1,353 injuries and 18 deaths in 2005.
  • Children ages 10-14 have the highest injury and death rate from bicycle accidents. This age group accounts for 26.4% of all injuries and approximately 27.8% of all deaths from bicycle accidents.
