PA Car Insurance: Recommended Coverages
To purchase PA car insurance, you must make many decisions. It can be a very confusing process.
First, you must choose to carry either Full Tort or Limited Tort on your policy. The tort option you choose will determine whether or not you can sue for pain and suffering for injuries in a car accident.
In addition to selecting a Tort option, there are only three other required PA car insurance coverages:
- Bodily Injury Liability
- Property Damage Liability
- Medical Expense Benefits
Only the medical expense benefit actually pays out money for injuries to you or someone covered by your policy in the event of an accident. The other two required coverages pay money to others who were injured because you were at fault for the accident.
The chart below shows the minimum required PA car insurance coverage compared to what our law firm recommends for minimum car insurance coverage. Our recommendations provide coverage that protects you and those covered under your insurance policy.

By choosing our recommended coverages, you now have more insurance that benefits you and your family - 7 out of our 9 recommended coverages pay money to you in the event of an accident.
Purchasing only the minimum car insurance coverages required by Pennsylvania law may save you a few dollars on your policy payment; but it could cost you thousands of dollars in terms of lost money if you are ever injured in a car accident.
We understand that car insurance coverage can be a financial burden for many households; however, if you are able to carry even higher amounts of insurance coverage than the minimums we recommend, we suggest that you do.
You can change your insurance coverage options at any time. You don't have to wait until you renew your policy to change your chosen options.

This guide is NOT a complete summary of the Pennsylvania Auto
Insurance Law. It is designed to highlight certain important features
of this law and should not be considered legal advice. Everyone has
different insurance needs. If you have any questions concerning your
coverage, please contact your insurance agent. Pennsylvania's Auto
Insurance Law was patterned after a similar law in Michigan. Because
our law is still relatively new, we refer to Michigan case law for
some of the examples used in this Consumer Guide.
