2008 "Words to be Heard" Scholarship Contest
Edgar Snyder & Associates awarded ten scholarships totaling $10,000 to graduating seniors in Erie and Central Pennsylvania through the second annual "Words to be Heard" Scholarship Program.
The "Words to be Heard" Scholarship Program was open to high school seniors in cities served by the firm, including Johnstown, Altoona, Bedford, New Paris, Everett, Loysburg, Saxton, Bellwood, Claysburg, Hollidaysburg, Martinsburg, Tyrone, Williamsburg, Nanty Glo, Patton, Ebensburg, Sidman, Northern Cambria, Cresson, Portage, Wingate, Bellefonte, Spring Mills, State College, Clearfield, Curwensville, DuBois, Flinton, Westover, Houtzdale, Phillipsburg, Morrisdale, McConnellsburg, Waterfall, Warfordsburg, Huntingdon, Alexandria, Mount Union, Three Springs, Belleville, Lewistown, Erie, Corry, Fairview, Waterford, Edinboro, Girard, Harborcreek, North East, Albion, and Union City.
The winners were selected based on proposals they put together for programs that would teach pre-teens and teenagers the consequences associated with underage drinking as well as drinking and driving.
"We wanted this contest to help us learn, from teens, what we can do to help prevent alcohol-related tragedies among their peers." - Attorney Edgar Snyder
The law firm of Edgar Snyder & Associates hopes to take some of the ideas presented in the essays and help make them happen in the local communities. During the Prom season and holidays throughout the year, the law firm discourages underage drinking and driving through several media campaigns. Edgar Snyder & Associates, along with Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, already sponsor Road Radio USA, a multi-media "edu-tainment" school assembly for teens and pre-teens designed to prevent underage drinking and other destructive behaviors.
The winning essays will be published in a booklet and sent to people we hope can help make the programs become a reality.
